Schloss Hallwyl

Another treasure in Hallwilersee

Schloss Hallwyl

Schloss Hallwyl is a photogenic moated castle located in Hallwilersee. Testament to the history of this schloss dates back to the 12th century. Some of the original facades are still visible, but the castle itself has gone thru major changes throughout the centuries. Everyone that visits its permanent exhibition will learn about the history behind the von Hallwyl family, their establishments over the Seetal valley and their long paid-off efforts towards the restoration and preservation of this home castle.

I went on a Sunday. Bad choice. Everything is closed on Sundays. Well, not everything, but you get the picture. At least I was able to take pictures of its outside façades.

During the summer, tourists from all over the world come and visit the castle. There are a couple in the canton of Aargau, including Lenzburg Castle which happens to be about 15-20 minutes away from this one. In my opinion, the best time to visit is during September-October and April-May. Temperatures around this time in Switzerland are more than pleasant. It won’t be as crowded as during the summer, and the walking trails are very inviting.

Same part of the castle located on the frontal island. It’s also where the main entrance for tourist is located.

Make sure you visit during the weekdays or on a Saturday in the afternoon. It’s not as crowded as it would be in the mornings, especially during the summertime.

A moated island castle turned into a two islands’ castle complete with residential quarters, dungeon tower, archives and entertainment rooms.

The little town of Hallwyl. After visiting the castle, you must walk one of the trails and venture outside. You won’t get lost. Promise.
